Selecting Fan Materials and Corrosion Protection

Material selection should begin with the substance contacting the fan. Outdoor humidity, salt air, cleaning chemicals, corrosive gases, abrasive dust, and high temperature create different risks and should not be grouped under a vague request for an anti-corrosion fan.

Describe the exposure

State the medium, concentration if known, operating temperature, moisture, condensation, particle size, cleaning method, indoor or outdoor location, and expected operating hours.

Review the complete construction

  • Housing and impeller material
  • Coating system and surface preparation
  • Shaft, fasteners, guards, and base materials
  • Seals, flexible connections, and drainage
  • Motor location and protection level

Plan inspection and maintenance

No coating removes the need for inspection. Access for cleaning, coating repair, drainage, and checking impeller buildup should be considered before the fan is ordered. Final compatibility should be confirmed against the actual medium and the buyer’s service requirements.
