How to Select a Dust Extraction Fan for Industrial Duct Systems

A practical checklist for selecting a dust extraction fan from airflow, pressure loss, dust characteristics, material, motor, duct layout, and safety inputs.

Dust extraction fan selection starts with the actual air system, not with a fan model name alone. A suitable industrial fan must move the required air volume through the duct network while overcoming the pressure losses created by hoods, ducts, elbows, filters, separators, dampers, and the discharge arrangement. The dust itself also affects material choice, impeller design, maintenance planning, and the safety review.

Start With the Required Airflow

Airflow is usually the first input, but it should be tied to the collection point. Record the number of hoods or pickup points, whether they run at the same time, the duct diameters, and the capture requirement at each process. A system can have adequate total airflow on paper but still collect poorly when a branch, hood, or damper receives too little air.

When a measured airflow is not available, provide the process description, photographs, a layout, existing duct sizes, and the equipment being served. These details make it possible to identify the questions that need to be resolved before a final selection is made.

Calculate the System Pressure, Not Only the Straight Duct Length

The selected fan must provide the required airflow at the total system pressure. Straight duct friction is only one part of that pressure. Elbows, transitions, branch connections, hoods, filters, cyclones, bag filters, silencers, dampers, weather hoods, and outlet conditions can each add resistance.

  • List the longest or most restrictive operating path.
  • Identify filters or separators and their clean and loaded pressure losses.
  • Include the duct layout, fittings, branch arrangement, and required discharge condition.
  • Confirm whether the system will operate with all branches open or with selected branches closed.

A fan curve and system curve should be reviewed together. Selecting only by a maximum airflow figure can lead to insufficient collection, excessive motor load, noise, or an operating point far from the intended duty.

Describe the Dust and the Airstream

Dust characteristics influence more than filtration. State the material being handled, particle size, approximate loading, moisture, stickiness, temperature, corrosiveness, and whether the material can cause abrasion. These conditions can affect the casing material, impeller type, wear protection, access requirements, cleaning plan, and motor location.

Where the dust may be combustible, the complete system requires a qualified safety assessment for the actual process, dust classification, location, electrical equipment, relief or isolation measures, and applicable local requirements. A standard fan description is not evidence that a system is suitable for a hazardous area.

Confirm Fan Construction and Drive Details

Once the duty and airstream are known, the fan construction can be reviewed. Relevant choices may include centrifugal configuration, direct or belt drive, material, coating, inlet and outlet arrangement, rotation, discharge direction, base, flexible connections, guards, inspection access, and drainage or cleanout needs.

For export or replacement projects, also confirm voltage, frequency, phase, motor power, protection level, insulation class, mounting arrangement, and required destination-market documentation. A 50 Hz and 60 Hz supply can change speed, fan performance, and absorbed power, so the electrical requirement should be confirmed before the model is finalized.

Prepare a Clear Inquiry

A useful request for quotation normally includes the application, required airflow, required pressure, dust or medium description, temperature, duct sketch or dimensions, motor supply, quantity, installation arrangement, destination, and required documents. If an existing fan is being replaced, add clear photographs, the nameplate, overall dimensions, rotation, discharge direction, and the reason for replacement.

Confirming these inputs before production helps align the fan, motor, documentation, packing, and order handoff with the intended operating conditions.
